Darren Semeniuk

Darren Semeniuk, Head Coach


Darren Semeniuk began his career a decade ago coaching AAA high school basketball in Edmonton. He moved to Kelowna in 2001 to coach high school basketball at OKM, KSS, and Mount Boucherie, winning several tournaments and zone championships.

Semeniuk's love of the game began as a player. He was the starting point guard at the University of Alberta and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. His impressive playing career included many nominations and awards, including Canada West Conference All-star, MVP, and Athlete of the Year when he played for the University of Alberta.

Semeniuk led the UBC Okanagan Lakers to back to back  second place finish at the BCCAA Provincial Championships and an seventh and eighth place finish at the CCAA National Championships in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.

In 2008/09 Semeniuk won the BCCAA Provincial Championship that sent the UBC Okanagan Heat to the CCAA National Championship for a third staright year.  

In five years manning the helm for the Heat Darren has led his team to a provincial medal four times compiling a league record of  51 wins and 31 losses.


 Glenn Szabo

Glenn Szabo, Assistant Coach


Glenn has recently relocated with his artist wife Helene Tremblay to Vernon from Regina; he decided to move out to the Okanagan as he enjoyed the area so much when he brought his team to Kelowna Secondary's Western Canada basketball tournament on two occasions. Glenn coached basketball in Regina at the senior 4A boy's level for 28 years at Campbell Collegiate; he also coached high school football for 5 years. As an NCCP Level 3 coach Glenn's team won 9 City Championships, 2 Provincial Championships, 2 LIT Championships and numerous tournament championships and provincial medals compiling a record of 674 wins to only 262 losses.

Glenn assisted for the University of Regina men's basketball team under Ken Murray for 3 years and he also spent 15 years as a provincial coach with BSI including a Silver Medal in 1989 Jeux Canada games, Silver Medal in 1986 Western Canada Juvenile Championships and 4th at 1985 Premiere Nationals.

As a coach he has served as a coach and mentor to both James Hillis (current head coach at U of Regina) and Greg Jockims (head coach of CIS Champions U of Saskatchewan Huskies). Glenn knows how to get the most of his athletes on the court and in the classroom as 96% of his graduates have gone on to earn a degree in university, many have also played CIS and NCAA basketball.

Glenn will bring his vast knowledge and his wealth of experience to the Heat basketball program as they transition to Canada West play in September 2011.

Cary Mellon

Cary Mellon, Assistant Coach


Cary Mellon has been involved in basketball-related activities in the community for the past 15 years – as a player, coach, and evaluator. Most recently, he has been assisting Coach Semeniuk at Kelowna Secondary School.  He helped to lead the UBC Okanagan Lakers to a second place finish at the BCCAA Provincial Championships and an eighth place finish at the CCAA National Championships in the 2007/2008 season.

A long-time follower of the men's basketball in the Okanagan, Cary is excited to continue his spot to the right of Coach Semeniuk during Heat games.
